A Rational Analysis of Bolton’s 5-2 Defeat At Wigan

It was a match we described as win-or-bust. I was expecting us to be second-favourites, and that we could lose it, but I could never have envisaged that.

How could we lose 5-2 to that lot? A team that was only a couple of places above us in the league, who hadn’t won at home for quite some time. It was a result that left myself, as well as pretty much all of the travelling contingent at the DW, angry.

We offered nothing until we were 3-0 down. Two of those goals were pathetic, the first the softest of set-piece goals to concede within the first five minutes of the afternoon, and then the third goal, where Remi Matthews’ brain seemed to fall out of his backside as he rolled the ball out to a Wigan player who simply squared it to Nick Powell for a tap-in. Bolton at that point decided to do something, and Gary O’Neil and Sammy Ameobi, a half-time replacement, at least gave them a bloody nose. But on both occasions it wouldn’t take Wigan long to reinstate their lead, the Latics having five different scorers on the day.

This club just needs absolutely cleansing now. Everyone out…owner, manager, overhaul of players, those coin-throwing juvenile fans, all of them.
