Allardyce for Blackburn?

Accusations, recriminations, and a feeling that the wrong man is in charge. Just for once, this isn`t a discussion about Bolton fans, but those up the road at Blackburn. Saturday`s home defeat to Sunderland pushed Paul Ince`s men into the bottom three and a lot of fingers closer to the panic button (there`s six on each hand you see, chortle, chortle.)

Crap jokes aside, it`s interesting/amusing to hear sentiments being expressed by supporters of a rival club that are near identical to those who follow your own. As ever, when things go pear shaped, it`s the manager who gets the flak. There were doubts about Ince when he was appointed after successful spells at League Two clubs. Could he make the transition to Premiership level? That question hasn`t been answered yet.

Prior to Ince getting the gig at Ewood Park, another man was in the frame. That man was former Wanderers manager Sam Allardyce, a prospect that Rovers fans were somewhat sniffy about. The Bolton connection was one thing, but it was Big Sam`s reputation for the long ball game which drew most disdain. How things change.

Now Allardyce is increasingly seen as someone who could keep Blackburn in the Premier League. ‘I’d hate the football but maybe not as much as I hate it at the moment,` claimed one fan. Would Sam take the job, after being overlooked last time? Too right he would. The man is desperate to get back into management in order to prove that his failure at Newcastle was an aberration on an otherwise respectable record.

The odds are that it would be a good fit. Blackburn don`t have the big club delusions of those on Tyneside, and Allardyce would have more money to spend than he had at Bolton, especially if Roque Santa Cruz follows Mark Hughes to Manchester`s biggest council house.

Such speculation is a little premature, of course. Despite their perilous position, Blackburn are only a point from mid-table. Chairman John Williams won`t be oiling the hinges on the trap door just yet, but if defeats away to Portsmouth and Spurs leave the club adrift he will have no choice but to act. If that happens an experienced Premier League hand will be required. Which leaves Sam Allardyce in pole position.
