Another Defeat As Bolton Fail To Find A Way Past Portsmouth

Bolton suffered another defeat yesterday as Portsmouth beat us 1-0 at the University of Bolton Stadium.

It wasn’t the worst we’ve played this season – with a combination of a poor goal to concede then an inability to finish our chances in the second half leading to us coming away empty-handed.

Brandon Fleming made his debut at left back and Jason Lowe came back into midfield after his suspension, but fans were dealt a blow when the teams were announced, as Daryl Murphy was nowhere to be seen in the squad, missing the game due to personal reasons.

It was quite a scrappy game, with Portsmouth liking a foul here and there. Sean Raggett was very fortunate not to be sent off in the first half, for a challenge just outside the box, and it was Raggett who would have a hand in the only goal of the game too. Remi Matthews pushed his header out only as far as fellow defender Christian Burgess, who scored his first goal of the season.

Bolton pushed after the break but we just couldn’t get that equaliser. The closest we got was when Ronan Darcy put in a superb cross but somehow Chris O’Grady, a half time substitute after Liam Edwards got injured, managed to not turn it home.

O’Grady missed another chance too, Dennis Politic did a better job of testing young Pompey goalkeeper Alex Bass but on both occasions the stopper did what was needed. On another day, we might have got something out of that. Portsmouth sat back for much of the second half and we couldn’t find a way through, and that tactic worked for them. As did the constant fouling from Ryan Williams after he came on.
