Sam Allardyce was fond of blowing his own trumpet. Gary Megson seems keen on using a whole brass band. Today`s lecture concerns his team selection for the UEFA cup game in Lisbon.
‘The focus was always on staying in the Premiership,’ he said, referring to that game, ‘I’m not sure whether we would be sat here now, discussing the things we are discussing if we had got through and beaten Sporting Lisbon because the squad was never strong enough to be able to compete.’
Clearly Megson feels in a position of strength. Next on the agenda is chairman Phil Gartside, who`s been unfairly treated according to the ginger one.
‘The chairman gave me this opportunity because he thought I could keep Bolton in the Premier League, which is what has happened,’ said Megson. ‘He did it for reasons that he believed would take the football club forward.
‘It’s a huge first step to avoid relegation and I’ve been surprised at the amount of animosity and stick that he came in for.
‘He brought me into the job, which people weren’t ecstatic about, but this is a very good football club.
‘They are looking at ways of getting more children to come to games and they recently paid for the supporters to travel to the Middlesbrough, Tottenham and Chelsea games.
‘The fans are very much at the forefront of the club’s thoughts here at Bolton, so I find it strange that they (the club’s hierarchy) come in for that amount of stick.”
Whether he`s right or wrong can be argued either way and no doubt will be, but being so continuously vocal on past events is ill-advised. Many Bolton fans still don`t trust Megson, despite the last-gasp escape from relegation. It will take time to mend that relationship and it needs to be done with actions on the pitch and not words spoken into a microphone.
