Francesco Pisano has been released by Bolton Wanderers.

The right back signed from Cagliari on a free transfer last summer but only made a handful of appearances before disappearing off the face of the earth.

He looked fairly solid during the home game against Brighton in September, but then played only two more games, before not wearing the white shirt again, then eventually being loaned out to Serie B side Avellino.

The Bolton News had reported Pisano’s contract included substantial appearance bonuses. Given by the time he signed Wanderers were well down the road to financial ruin, this seems like an horrendous error of judgement by someone at the club.

I do think he could have been a good player. He probably is a good player. But it was very much the wrong club at the wrong time.

With Lawrie Wilson the only senior right back (if we’re not counting Josh Vela), that’s probably another area we need to recruit now.

  • He had to go didn’t he. Wilson will no doubt find his level in League One. And h. opefully, he should do a competent job on the whole at right back. But neither he nor Moxey fill me with joy defending the flanks. Both have shown very good qualities, but likewise they have been dire at times. Moxey, in particular goes AWL at crucial times. However, he does support the front men quite well. With Parky at the helm, maybe we shall see greater determination and consistent effort all round. We certainly need it. There does seem to be a new broom about the place. Let’s hope it sweeps in some renewed confidence. We need to hit the ground running for a change……A word about Pratley. Probably, most fans would like to see the back of him and I feel the same way. But at the back of my mind, I can’t forget how he played before his hamstring. He was one of our better performers. If Parky can get him back scoring and looking like a player, instead of an ungainly wrestler, we may just be glad he stayed – money or no money!

  • It would appear that yet another manager is toying with the idea of playing Derik at right-back. Both Lennon and now Parky it seems, believe he can be a success in that position. For me, he isn’t suited to playing there at all and struggled constantly last year. But we all know that he excelled in front of the back four. No doubt time will tell.
