Bolton play West Ham United this evening in the third round of the Carling Cup. Back in the 2005-6 season it seemed like the Hammers were the opposition every week. Five times the two sides met, in the league and both cup competitions.

One of those was in the Carling Cup, at the Reebok, in front of a mere 10,927 fans. Maybe that`s why it had the feel of a pre-season friendly, with the visitors dominating. It was 62 minutes before the home side had an attempt on goal. Two minutes later, they were ahead as Mexican Jared Borgetti headed home Kalilou Fadiga`s cross for the only goal of the game.

So ended a forgettable evening, although Louise Taylor`s report of the match in the following morning`s Guardian provided some unintentional hilarity. In a demonstration of lazy journalism at its most witless she claimed that Alan Pardew`s side were ‘liberally sprinkled with products of Upton Park’s excellent youth-development system`.

There were three players on the pitch who had come via their respective clubs academies. Two of them played for Bolton.
