Dorian Dervite has become the latest Bolton player to secure a new contract, a one-year deal with an option of a second.

The deal has been met with a mixed reaction from Wanderers fans on the internet, some are unsure that he would be able to make the step back up to the Championship, while some argue that he performed well when called upon this season.

I`m inclined to lean towards the second point of view. Dervite had to wait for real action, but played very well in the last couple of months of the season slotting into the back three with David Wheater and Mark Beevers. Next season may or may not see us revert to a back four, in which case Dervite would almost certainly be the backup option.

In a transfer window where we will eventually have to bring in loads of new faces, central defence is one of the areas where we can probably sign up steady performers from last season and give them the chance to step up they have earned, leaving us to seek new players for the flanks and further forward where we`re far more in need of bolstering.

Because as it stands, we have Max Clayton and Chris Taylor as our only two wide players, and no real attacking midfielder, unless you count Josh Vela. That concerns me more than our centre backs.
