Bolton Hit Sunderland For Six – Could We Go On Another Run?

It was a completely unexpected result, but what a result it was yesterday – Bolton beating Sunderland by six goals to nil is the type of scoreline that would probably make you put your pint down and wonder if you need to stop drinking.

It was a complete and utter annihilation, that we haven’t seen for a generation. It was the biggest win at home in 25 years, and the biggest ever at our current home. Sunderland were alright for about 15 minutes, but even then, they were hardly putting us under siege, and once we were 1-0 up, we never looked back.

Dion Charles, having got off the mark in spectacular fashion last week, did so again, James Trafford’s ball going straight through to the striker and he beat Ron-Thorben Hoffmann to it and guided the ball into the back of net. Dapo Afolayan started and finished a move to make it 2-0 at the break, in what was easily the best 45 minutes we had seen all season. The next 45 was even better than that. Sunderland were pressured all afternoon and looked a rattled side. Charles scored again, Kieran Lee finished off an intricate move to make it four.

Sunderland then well and truly self-destructed, Danny Batth’s header would have been a stunning finish had it been at the other end, then Declan John, playing against a former employer where it didn’t work out for him, finished the afternoon off with an effort which seemed to dip late before going in. A truly unbelievable result – every player out there did their job perfectly. There’s probably too much to do if we were to replicate last season’s outcome, but play even close to those levels and we will be moving up the table in the coming months.
