Bolton avoided a cup upset as they just about dealt with Grimsby to reach the second round.

Phil Parkinson was forced into making midfield changes due to injuries and suspensions, but he opted to keep the back four that had been so solid of late, while Zach Clough was also in the side.

Bolton were comfortably the better side in the opening quarter, and Liam Trotter, once of the Mariners, headed home from a corner in the 20th minute tos core the only goal of the game.

The League Two side pushed on and were arguably the better side in the second half. Mark Howard was forced into several saves, denying Brandon Comley and tipping a Rhys Browne effort around the post late on, the pick of the efforts.

In the end though, Bolton move onto the second round, which will be played in four weeks time.
