After a win in their last away trip, it was back to usual for Wanderers on the road yesterday. It was always one thing to beat a team who weren`t going through a particularly good patch, but it was another to go to a Brentford side who had only been beaten in cup ties at Griffin Park since the opening day of the season.
It wasn`t the worst away performance you`d ever see – we held our own for most of the first half, as around a thousand Bolton fans, about 15% of the crowd, made about 99% of the noise. Unfortunately, Florian Jozefzoon had a good reason to shut us up when he scored five minutes before the break.
While we tried to play positively, in the end Brentford`s ability to keep the ball in the second half eventually paid dividends when Neal Maupay came off the bench to score in injury time with a backheel finish. Harry Charsley started with some promise but then faded away and struggled to link up with Gary Madine on his Bolton debut.
We had some half-chances, but they came to Madine, who ultimately couldn`t beat Daniel Bentley, who became the target for a fun bit of abuse from our fans. Probably the best thing about yesterday were the results for the other teams down there with us, only Hull going back above us by virtue of a 0-0 draw.
