It’s another cup tie for Wanderers before the league campaign kicks off – tomorrow night sees us play the first of three EFL Trophy group games.
We’ve also been drawn against Shrewsbury and Newcastle’s youngsters, but we’ll open things up with a home match against Crewe. We’ll have some League One opposition to test us, Ian Evatt will be using this to fine tune things ahead of Saturday, but also after Satutrday’s loss in the Carabao Cup it would be nice to get a result.
There will probably be changes but only so many can be made under the rules of this competition. There are no new injury worries for Bolton, with Reiss Greenidge also recovering from a hamstring issue. Crewe will field a similar squad to the one that lost to Lincoln at the weekend, they are without a number of players including Will Jaaskelainen who is on international duty.
It’s not that long since we played Crewe, just under a fortnight ago we lost 3-0 to them in a pre-season friendly. The last competitive match we played against them was back in August 2017, in the first round of the Carabao Cup at their place. Chris Porter gave them the lead, but second half goals from Adam Armstrong and Derik sealed our passage to round two, and we eventually played in round three where we fell at West Ham.
Crewe were promoted automatically from League Two last season, and will be looking to kick on in the third tier when the league gets underway. One player who we will be familiar with and should be involved in some form tomorrow is Luke Murphy, who recently rejoined his first club after his two-season spell with us…
A tough one as again, there’s some doubt over both lineups. While only a select few people witnessed the 3-0 friendly defeat, it seemed that 3-0 may have flattered Crewe a bit. I’ll go for a draw again. 1-1.
