It seemed like such a good idea at the time. Offering children`s season tickets for a mere £49 at the Reebok Stadium was seen as a way of counteracting falling attendances and encouraging the next generation of fans to attend. After events at half-time in Saturday`s game against West Brom, a radical re-think will be required.

Bolton`s football in the first half was of such an atrocious standard, that many youngsters were traumatised and required treatment. Amongst the weeping children in the West Stand Upper, one little girl was asked if she wanted her mother to be contacted.

‘No,` she replied, in between sobs, ‘that`s the cow who bought me the ticket.` Elsewhere in the stadium, stewards were alarmed to find a young boy attempting to gouge his own eyes out.

The authorities will be examining video evidence before deciding whether to take action against Bolton Wanderers and it is thought that at the very least, they will demand that health warnings are printed on junior tickets in future. The club have so far made no comment.
