Bolton Wanderers: Ayr In The Lungs

So pre-season has finally begun, and I have started to get really excited. 22 different players took to the field for the Trotters last night, getting invaluable minutes under their belts.

And the result, who cares? In fact, I’m not even going to mention it again in this strangest of match reports. It doesn’t matter. Win, draw, or lose; the result meant jack. It doesn’t matter who scored, or who was in goal when a goal was conceded. All that mattered was that the team was playing together, getting fit, trying out tactics and formations, and gelling as a side.

And yet there was a collection of idiotic fans who spent yesterday evening harassing our chairman about the result. Fools. Just wait until the season starts.

One thing the match did show is the amount of options in midfield and defence. In these two positions, we have enough strength in depth to match any team in our league, with quality squad members behind every quality starter. We need a striker, as I have previously mentioned, but with one more we have a really solid squad capable of challenging for promotion.

Our next match in our little tour of Scotland is on Saturday, when we face Hamilton Accies. Although the match is still mainly about fitness, the result will mean a little bit more. What we will get to see is a good indication of the starting eleven for the first few weeks of the season, and hopefully the blossoming of some partnerships on the field that we missed last year, where we often looked like 11 strangers playing a different game to one another.

With that match being more like a real game, the match report will follow suit. Plus I’m not writing it, so it won’t be weird like this.
