Midfielder retires

I was sat here this lunchtime typing out my report about the fans forum when the news broke that Fabrice had decided to retire from football on the recommendation of his medical team. Whilst not entirely unexpected, it is still sad news for everyone associated with Bolton Wanderers.

Fabrice is someone who seems to go through life with a smile on his face, enjoying it as he goes. You can see this every time he pops up in a photo at one ceremony or another.

I wrote last week that whilst his appearing at everything and everywhere was wearing a bit thin, if there was a choice between him doing that and not doing anything at all, I would take the former. His story has touched all of us and I think it goes without saying that everyone wishes him the best.

As a break with the tradition of this site, we will reprint part of what Fab said when the club announced his retirement this lunchtime:

Football has been my life since I was a teenage boy and it has given me so many opportunities. Above all else, I love the game and count myself very lucky to have been able to play at the highest level. While the news is devastating, I have much to be thankful for. I thank God that I am alive and I pay tribute once again to the members of the medical team who never gave up on me. I would also like to thank everyone who has supported me throughout my career, and the Bolton fans who have been incredible. I am blessed to have the support of my family and friends at this time.

Stay smiling Fabrice.
