Bolton ended January without a win as they blew a lead against Charlton, despite playing the majority of the game with an extra man.

Things looked promising earlier in the afternoon as Lewis Page was given an early red card. Josh Vela got free and was cynically taken out. From that, Zach Clough was presented with a free kick in good range and managed to bang it into the top left corner.

Despite the lead though, Bolton had been largely sloppy to start with, Charlton were giving the full backs a lot to think about. The Addicks got a free kick in the 23rd minute, which was crossed to the back post and Patrick Bauer managed to head home.

It was hard to tell who was actually a man down such was Bolton’s passiveness, then Wigan loanee Nathan Byrne managed to score another in first half stoppage time, on the counter, with some awful defending and questionable refereeing calls in the move.

Bolton never looked like equalising, unable to play through the thirds, either lumping it forward, or horizontally passing until it ended up wide and nothing happened.

Calls for transfer activity will now intensify. Something needs to be tweaked. It’s been a fairly settled lineup since October, but teams may have found us out, and without Sammy Ameobi, or at least the unpredictability that he can provide, we struggle to open up any space.

MK Dons won by a big scoreline today. That’s where we go next week…
