BWFC: ‘Keepers

Decisions will soon have to be made

In the coming weeks, decisions will be made and we will find ourselves (most likely) at least one ‘keeper shorter than we are now.

I’d like to keep today’s article much simpler and I’ll just tell you what I think we should do; after all this site is about opinions!

Keep Bogdan
Adam Bogdan has matured from the flying scruffy-haired Hungarian who took over from the veteran Jussi Jaaskelainen during our relegation campaign. While retaining outstanding reflexes and agility, Bogdan has matured into a calm head between the sticks and his last performance against Liverpool epitomised that. He will be a wanted man in the sumer, but I think he’s a keeper. (See what I did there?)

Sign Amos
Ben Amos has gone from strength to strength since signing originally as a backup option on loan from Manchester United. Like Bogdan he is a cool head at the back and his impressive distribution has been refreshing after months of watching our team having to sit depressingly far back due to Lonergan’s failure to strike the ball cleanly.

Release Lonergan
I like Lonergan, I really do. However, I think he is overrated. His distribution is quite poor, which has a greater impact on general play than many think. This has probably been his best season since joining Bolton and his injury was very very poorly timed and this may well cost him his Wanderers future. I wouldn’t worry about him finding another Championship club, as his form this season should have done enough to earn him another contract. I’d be sad to see him leave but we should act in the best interest of the club.

I think that Neil Lennon may well do the above as since the return of all three to fitness, Amos and Bogdan have tended to make the matchday squads with Lonergan as third choice.
