Come Off It Heskey!

An article from Adlington2, looking at Emile Heskey’s previous endorsement of Neil Lennon for the (then) vacant Aston Villa job….

We know that loyalty is a rare bloom in the field of cabbages that is league football – but! It takes the chocolate digestive to see Heskey actively punting Neal Lennon, the best the thing to happen to Bolton for years – to another club. Who is interested in his opinion that an average outfit like Villa is a perfect fit for Lennon? Well TalkSport, obviously, but they will say anything, do anything to fill their empty airwaves. After his return from Australia Heskey was going nowhere, the only memories in England were of a striker who missed even more times than he fell over in his days at Liverpool. Oh, and he was at Wigan too. Enough said.

Yet when he is given a chance at Bolton he reacts by advising his benefactor to apply for the Villa job. So here’s some advice for Heskey. If that’s the way you feel – leave now and save yourself some grief.

If Eidur Gudjohnsen can be nursed along to the end of the season Heskey is surplus to requirements anyway. He was never going to be more than a half season signing and the chances of him staying injury free look remote.

It will take an incredible run for us to get into the play offs but the amount of money available in the Premier after the latest deals must be making Gartside drool. Even he must see that Lennon is the man to take us there so he should be doing everything possible to keep him. Court appearances aside, he has no more important job to get on with.

I rang Radio 5 after the second Liverpool game to say how pleased I was that at last, a Bolton side looked capable of doing the business, after so many disastrous replacements for Sam Allardyce. I said Neil Lennon was a genius and the producer’s ears lit up. “Will you stay by the phone and say that again,” he pleaded.

“My pleasure,” I said. Because he is – and far too good for Villa.
