Former Bolton player Danny Guthrie has escaped further censure from the FA, after doing to Craig Fagan what every Newcastle United fan would like to do to Mike Ashley. Guthrie missed with his first wild swing, but got to his man a few seconds later, leaving the Hull City striker with a broken leg which could keep him out for three months. You have to admire the persistence, even if the intent was a bit dodgy.

Guthrie was always a yellow card waiting to happen when he played for Bolton, endangering both himself and opponents with reckless challenges, but that was down to youthful enthusiasm. Some said that he lacked an end product in his time at the Reebok. That accusation couldn`t be made now, but his newly found resolve would be better demonstrated with a move that involves the ball.

The former Liverpool youth player says that he will apologise to Fagan in person. Flies on the wall are already forming an orderly queue.

Do you think that Bolton should have hung onto Guthrie, or was he a waste of space who has turned into a violent thug?
