Get Rid of the Cid

There was something of an odd feel at the Reebok on Saturday as Sam Allardyce sat in the away dug out and Bolton had the zany comedy centre half. Gerald Cid wears the number 15 shirt, the same as Radi Jaidi and the similarities don`t stop there. Cid can neither read the game or position himself properly. He can`t head the ball, pass or tackle either. One presumes that Allardyce signed him for Bolton as some kind of horrible revenge.

Cid`s influence on the game was felt in the tenth minute as he threw himself at Charles N`Zogbia`s free kick and missed by about three feet. Jussi Jaaskelainen was as reluctant to come off his line as he is to sign a new contract and Bolton were one down. Things got worse quickly as Obafemi Martins found himself in acres of space and fired home spectacularly. Cid was also involved in the third goal as he failed dismally to challenge Martins, who was left with a free run on goal.

It was a disastrous start to the Wanderers campaign and highlighted all too painfully the defensive frailties that threaten Bolton`s Premiership survival far more than Sammy Lee`s appointment as manager.

Gerald Cid is that rare thing. A defender who can make Titus Bramble seem good.
