Bolton’s next pre-season trip sees them make the short trip over the Pennines to take on Halifax Town. Here’s a bit about them.
Following the turmoil surrounding Halifax Town AFC, the club reformed 10 years ago as FC Halifax Town. They’ve since made their way up three divisions, winning promotion two years to the National League via the playoffs. They also won the FA Trophy in 2016, as well as reaching at least the first round proper in the FA Cup four years in a row from 2013 to 2016. 2014 saw them rekindle an old rivalry as they drew Phil Parkinson’s Bradford.
Last season saw them finish 16th in their first season at Conference level since the club reformed.
Pre-season so far
The Shaymen have had two games under their belt already. They started off with a home defeat to Stockport County, which these days isn’t anything to shout about, but Tuesday saw them thump Brighouse 7-1 away from home. We’re the most illustrious of their pre-season opponents, Port Vale and Boston will also visit the Shay in the next few weeks, while they’ll travel to Coalville Town.
Any former Wanderers?
A few! Niall Maher and Sanmi Odelusi have both wound up at Halifax. Maher joined earlier in the calendar year and played nine games last season. Odelusi is a summer signing, after an unsuccessful half-season at Cheltenham, he has signed a one-year deal, dropping out of the league in the process.
The name of the men in the dugout may also ring a bell. They’re managed by Jamie Fullarton, who took over for the final 12 games of last season. Fullarton was in charge of the Under-21s when Dougie Freedman was in charge. His assistant is Phil Hughes, who was Owen Coyle’s preferred goalkeeping coach at Wanderers and almost any other job Coyle managed to blag since then, for that matter.
