How Not to Defend : A Bolton Masterclass

Bolton`s performance at the weekend against Fulham was utterly wretched. The team were devoid of belief, attacking ideas and pride. However, all that pales into insignificance when compared to the Keystone Cops defending.

Goal One

There has been a suggestion that Jussi Jaaskelainen was partially responsible for this, but he was a mere spectator. When Andy O`Brien intercepted Simon Davies`s attempted pass, he should have taken the ball away from goal. Instead, he took it in the opposite direction, had a poor first touch and lost the race for the ball with Andrew Johnson. Johnson did well to it into the net and even better to keep a straight face.

Goal Two

As ridiculous a goal as you`ll ever see. Once again O`Brien was dispossessed by Johnson. The Fulham forward lost the ball in the penalty area, but Danny Murphy gained possession, lost it, regained it and fired a shot against the cross bar despite the efforts of Gretar Steinsson. By the time the ball fell to Sean Davies there were seven Bolton players in the six yard box. None of them managed to block his shot. Jlloyd Samuel`s attempt to do so whilst stood behind the goal line had an obvious flaw.

Goal Three

What was Gavin McCann thinking of? Under no pressure on the left edge of the penalty area, he played the ball across the face of goal to no one in particular. Clint Dempsey resisted the urge to giggle and played in Diomansy Kamara. We know what happened next.

In this game, Fulham scored as many goals as they had done in the fourteen previous away encounters. It is customary to give the match ball to a player who scores a hat trick. In this case Bolton presented it to the visitors with a ribbon wrapped around it’s centre.
