Andy Lonergan looks as though he’ll be leaving Bolton this summer, more so if former Man United loanee Ben Amos does arrive, with a move to Wigan being mooted….

An up and down season, arguably up and down career with the club, looks to be coming to an end with him leaving the Macron Stadium this summer and then dropping down a Division to sign for relegated Wigan as they look to bounce back to the Championship at the first attempt?

Lonergan didn’t enjoy the best of starts, to put it mildly, this season but found himself back in the side when Adam Bogdan was injured and his form saw him gain praise from teammates and his manager alike with Neil Lennon basically saying he was the best ‘keeper in the Championship at the time!

As fate would have it an injury against Dougie Freedman’s Nottingham Forest, with it Freedman that had brought him back into the Bolton starting XI before he was sacked, meant that an injury enforced spell on the sidelines due to concussion saw Amos come in on loan, the rest as they say is history…. Well, up to the point when Amos’ loan spell expired and he returned to his parent club but it was Bogdan that took up the no.1 position again.

The legendary Jimmy Greaves, who sadly suffered a major stroke at the weekend, once said ‘it’s a funny old game’ when referring to football, which is summed up nicely by the potential plight of Lonergan, who looks like going from the best ‘keeper in the Championship to a player released and dropping into League 1….
