Despite another one nil defeat to Middlesbrough last night, manager Neil Lennon was a relatively happy man given the performance we put in and the improvements we showed over the course of 90 minutes.

Speaking to the Official Site following the game, Lennon said he was pleased to see us match the recent league leaders for large parts in the game, but he was obviously disappointed to see us come out with nothing to show for it.

‘All in all, it was a good performance. I felt we deserved something out of the game. To come to a place like Middlesbrough, and to be able to say we deserved something after our recent performances on the road, is certainly encouraging.’

Lennon goes on to admit that ‘as you would expect’ Middlesbrough were the better side in the opening 45 minutes in front of their home fans, but in the second period we grew into the game nicely and he felt second half we were the team most ‘likely’ to score.

‘We had a few chances late on. Alfie has had a sight of goal late on and we’ve had an effort cleared off the line. We obviously don’t like losing and we’re disappointed not to have taken something from the game, but overall it is a big improvement. We’ve had a difficult month, there’s no shying away from that. Injuries have taken their toll, but that’s no excuse.’

The gaffer went on to praise Emile Heskey for his work up front and he felt he ‘dominated’ their defenders and caused all kinds of problems for them in the air, and he credited Amos for coming in and his presence gave us greater composure, so they were positives as well.

‘That performance gives us a bit of a platform to build on going into back to back home games. If we can take points from them, then that’ll ease a bit of the pressure. We were concerned after the performance at Nottingham Forest, but we looked a lot better tonight.’
