The mood`s been a bit glum at the Reebok lately. A series of awful performances, a departing manager with a forked tongue and the chance of a European place slipping away are hard to bear.

Just as well then, that Michael Ricketts is still around to cheer us up. Not that he does this on purpose, but the news that he`s been released by yet another club, perennial Championship chokers Preston this time, always gladdens the heart.

And it could all have been so different. Ricketts was a key figure in Bolton`s promotion to the Premier League, helped them stay there and even won himself an England cap, although he had already decided that football was too much trouble by the time it arrived.

The lardy one left for Middlesbrough, claiming that he wanted a ‘bigger` club, a comment which was treated with the disdain that it deserved and still is. That the smoggies paid £3.5 million for him is another thing that cheers the heart.

He failed at ‘Boro. And Leeds and Stoke and Cardiff and Burnley and Southend and now Preston. The last one`s all the sweeter because for once, he`d gone to some effort to reduce his considerable bulk and get himself back into shape.

Never mind Mikey, you can get back to eating kebabs full time now.

Note: If you`re wondering why there`s a picture of Nicky Hunt, it`s because his surname rhymes with the word that Wanderers fans use most often to describe Ricketts.
