The latest Vital Bolton poll has yielded an interesting and perhaps surprising result with 56% of respondents indicating that Bolton`s fortunes would still have declined, even if Sam Allardyce has stayed at the club.

The stats from Allardyce`s last few months in charge, give that view credence. At the beginning of January 2007, Bolton were third in the table. In the remaining 17 games they won only four, all against bottom six clubs and were conceding an average of two goals per game. The Whites had a small, ageing, seemingly dispirited squad that would have needed substantial improvement, whoever was at the helm.

For current manager, Gary Megson, it`s good news. Not everyone blames him for everything. It`s also an indication that Bolton fans are grounded in reality and fully aware that the club aren`t competing on a level playing field. This contradicts views expressed to this writer by a certain member of the Reebok top brass.
