Takeaways from York Away

With Bolton beating York 2-0 today, we look at one or two key points

Getting the Ball Forward

“I`ve told the players it`s okay keeping the ball but when we get it in the final third lets drive at people, let’s commit defenders,’ Phil Parkinson said to the Bolton News.

A real reoccuring theme, especially earlier on last season, was that we kept the ball very well, but did nothing with it. Parkinson seems to realise that, and a ball forward knocked down by Gary Madine into the path of Mark Davies for an early first goal set the tone. Jamie Proctor’s second half penalty sealed a win for the Whites.

Howard Gives You Extra?

That was an attempt of linking a keeper named Howard, saving, and the old Halifax adverts. I am so sorry.

In any case, this is about the goalkeeper situation. Since Mark Howard joined the club, the first three friendlies saw him and Ben Amos get a half of football in each game. Today, Howard played the full 90, while Ben Amos played for the second string at Crewe last night. Is that an indication that Howard is winning a battle to be the number one keeper ahead of the big kickoff in a fortnight, or is overanalysing?

Trialists Out, Trialists In

It looks like Gordon Greer is a no go. Not included in today’s squad, then he pops up as a triallist for Blackburn Rovers, a club he played for 15 years ago, when he was about 40. There was also no sign of David Wheater.

Frazer Richardson played and picked up an injury, while a new face popped up in former Stoke and Nottingham Forest centre-back Danny Collins.
