Dutch defender joins Bolton on trial. We discuss why this might be

Nick Kuipers, a 22-year-old centre back from MVV Maastricht has joined Bolton Wanderers on trial with a view to signing, The Bolton News reports.

His contract expires in the Summer, and it is thought that if he impresses he’d sign a pre-contract agreement with The Trotters.

He’s a big lad, at 6 ft 3 and is probably more your David Wheater type than Matthew Upson.

It might surprise you that Neil Lennon’s looking at defenders, given the strength of our current defence and our lack of money to spend restrengthening all areas. My guess is that it could well be with a view to replacing a departing centre back. Who’s a centre back, struggling for game time? David Wheater? He’s been injured and is probably on Premier League wages. Being reliatively young, with a good reputation (he’d been called up to the England squad during his Middlesborough days) could persuade teams to pay a reasonable sum for him.

A like-for-like switch one would presume?

I do feel, though, that if Lennon wanted to replace Wheater he could recall Baptiste unless he’s holding out for a cash bid from Blackburn Rovers- with whom he spends this season on loan.
