What Can We Expect From Bolton’s Opening Pre-Season Friendly?

|

Bolton Wanderers open up their pre-season fixture list tomorrow, with a match away to York City. What can we expect?

The answer is, we’re really not sure. Somehow, the plan appears to be that there will be two separate teams, probably playing a half each. What few senior first-teamers we actually have could well all be involved, but Luke Murphy has had a calf problem, while Josh Magennis started his training later having been with Northern Ireland.

Therefore, it looks as if the squad will mainly be scholars, with one or two trialists – apparently the club has been looking at potential incomings even though they can’t sign anyone until that takeover is eventually done. As an aside, Bury’s squad at Nantwich today was composed entirely of trialists.

One of those could be Jack Grimmer – the attacking Scottish full-back was released by Coventry at the end of last season after failing to build on his successful part in the League Two promotion campaign in the 2017-18 season, simply not getting as many appearances. With no senior defenders on our books as it stands, I’ll take him. I’ll also take his brother, dad and gran if it means boosting the numbers.

York finished mid-table in last season’s National League North, and lost 5-0 at home to Leeds in a friendly last week.

After tomorrow, we face Chester, Preston and Oldham before we kick off the League One season three weeks today. Hopefully, the ownership saga will be sorted by then.
