What The Papers Mean

It is no suprise that when it came to reporting yesterday’s game, the press would focus more on Spurs’ attempts to claim fourth place than Bolton’s attempts to look interested. However, hidden within the gushing over Huddlestone’s goal was some slight praise for how the Trotters played.

Spurs were in danger of being frustrated by a well drilled and determined Bolton team. The Mail sounds surprised that this should be the case.

Bolton, for whom Jack Wilshere and Taylor were especially lively, competed better than might have been expected of a team with nothing to play for. The Times also show some shock, though not as much shock as those who have called Taylor the laziest Bolton player since Mario Jardel.

Had it not been for one fine strike by Tom Huddlestone in the first half it could have all gone pear-shaped yesterday against a tidy Bolton side. If the News of the World thinks they were tidy tomorrow, wait until they wear the new kit next season.

Spurs went after Bolton yesterday, but Owen Coyle`s men were solid in defence, restricting the home side to half-chances in the first half. The Telegraph agree that Messrs. Knight and Cahill have actually met each other, which wasn’t evident against Portsmouth.

A series of booming tackles angered the crowd as Bolton’s physical approach roughed up the hosts. The Sun just can’t get rid of that monkey on their back.

However….

In the first half Bolton looked every bit the team whose season was effectively already over, half-hearted in their tackling and happy to sit back and invite Tottenham on to them. The Observer obviously wasn’t at the same game as the The Telegraph.

King was needed in the early stages to cut out Ivan Klasnic`s cross, although the striker`s effort was not pleasing Coyle, who was up on his feet swearing at his player and calling him “lazy” when he did not track back. The Star think that if the man with one kidney wants to stay, he’d better get back into the manager’s good books pronto.
