When Bolton Signed Jay Spearing

On signing Bolton Wanderers club captain, Jay Spearing last year and his projected impact vs. reality

I think many of you can join me in saying that we wanted Jay Spearing to join.

He’s got a good pedigree and is highly rated from his time at Liverpool. Following this he enjoyed a very good loan spell with Bolton Wanderers at the end of which he found himself named as our Player of the Season.

However, since he’s signed permanently he’s struggled, in my opinion, to recapture the form that saw him win the hearts of the Wanderers faithful and recently has lost his place to Liam Trotter.

Phil Gartside gave manager Dougie Freedman the ‘go-ahead’ to shell out in excess of 1.5 million to land the central midfielder. I think most fans believed this to be the right decision.

It sounded right- we had been on an incredible run which saw us move 13 places up the table in the last three months of the season, and li’l Jay was a big part of that.

Here’s some reaction to his signing:

Anyhow, he has still shown moments of magic- just take his goal against Blackburn last season. He’s good on the ball (although he often makes the wrong decisions) and he’ll fight for his club.

My question for you today is, should we have re-signed Jay Spearing?
