Bolton opened up a healthy four point gap over Fleetwood after securing a 4-2 win at Oxford last night.

The game started perfectly for Bolton, Gary Madine’s header was saved by Simon Eastwood, but Filipe Morais was on hand to give us a fourth minute lead.

That was then doubled. Morais, who is fast becoming a cult hero, couldn’t score from a free kick, but it did come out to Mark Beevers who was on hand to give us some breathing space. Frankly at that point, it felt too easy, but Oxford managed to fix that after Kane Hemmings halved their deficit, Ben Alnwick made a mess of things in the air and Oxford managed to score what was a scrappy goal.

Into the second half, Bolton got a third goal, which one have hoped would have put things to bed. It went down as a Chey Dunkley own goal with a misdirected header, after that Bolton seemed to back off a bit too much, but we’ve been here before. So when Chris Maguire stepped up and scored a great free kick with 15 minutes left, the nerves were setting in.

Thankfully, in injury time, Gary Madine brought the ball down, managed to backheel it into the path of the onrushing Josh Vela, who wrapped things up. It means Bolton have scored four away goals three times on the bounce for the first time ever.

I do think it’s between us and Fleetwood now for second spot, I would rule out everyone below third (sorry Bradford) – the Trawlermen’s form though does mean we need to keep going, despite the breathing space we have
