Bolton gave themselves a little shot in the arm as they beat a Blackpool side 1-0, also giving themselves the chance to progress to the knockout stages of the EFL Trophy.

There were first starts at home this season for Derik and Tom Thorpe, and a debut from Ben Alnwick as Bolton made as many changes as they can within the rules.

And it was Sammy Ameobi who scored the only goal of the game in the fourth minute. A corner came in and the Newcastle loanee finished from close range to give Wanderers the lead.

It could have been 2-0 on the half hour mark but Josh Vela’s shot was blocked on the line after Zach Clough pulled one back to him.

Blackpool had chances though, with the hosts’ backline having to put in blocks and Ben Alnwick was kept busy.

Clough also had a chance in the second half, hitting the inside of the post, and then firing his second attempt over.

Gary Madine came off the bench but was also denied a goal, this time by a goalkeeper’s save. Alex Samizadeh finally got a run out with just under ten minutes left to play. Michael Cain had a late shot for Blackpool but his Italian job was botched by Ben Alnwick who made what was an easy save.

Derik came to the rescue as Wanderers survived a late scare clearing a ball off the line.
