Bolton Wanderers edged through to join the last 32 teams in the UEFA competition with a nerve wracking draw against Sevilla.

Bolton required just a point from the encounter to ensure progression. On 65 minutes that progression seemed assured when Bruno N’Gotty struck home from six yards to put Bolton ahead. However the Wanderers’ nerves were put to the test when Sevilla substitute, Adriano equalised, slotting a shot past goalkeeper Ian Walker following a move down the right flank.

If Bolton would have conceded another then they would have been relying on Turkish side Beskitas’ result against Portuguese club Guimaraes.

As it happened Bolton managed to hold on for a draw, despite Sevilla’s Brazillian striker, Luis Fabiano hitting the woodwork in the first half.

Bolton were aided on their way by Sevilla coach, Juande Ramos, selecting a second string team. Sevilla were already assured of qualification for the next round and Ramos saw this game as an opportunity to give some of his squad players a chance. Luis Fabiano playing upfront instead of the usual forward, ex-West Ham and Spurs forward, Fredi Kanoute.

Bolton’s progression to the latter stages of the European competition is indicative of the progression made by the club in recent years. They club has only just developed into a secure Premiership outfit the last two years. The club’s position in the top half of the league allows the team to concentrate greater efforts on cup competitions such as the UEFA.

Before the game, Bolton manager, Sam Allardyce claimed that qualification for the next round would deserve a champagne celebration. The corks were probably rebounding off the celing in the dressing room last night in celebration of another historic night for Bolton Wanderers football club.
