Wheater Double Sees Bolton Down Shrewsbury

David Wheater proved to be an unlikely goalscoring hero as he struck twice in five minutes to get Bolton over the line against Shrewsbury.

Bolton looked threatening from set plays all through the first half, with Tom Thorpe having an early effort grasped off the line by Shrews keeper Jason Leutwiler.

Wheater then scored his first following up his own initial header hitting the post from the corner. Minutes later he scored his second, Jay Spearing could have shot from the free kick, but a well worked move worked back across the box and the lead was doubled.

Bolton looked cairly comfortable for most of the game after that. Zach Clough could have made it three as he slipped through the left channel and had a pop at goal but Leutwiler somehow kept it out of the top corner. I’m unsure how much he knew about it.

But six minutes from time, Junior Brown headed one in and from there Bolton threatened to crumble as they struggled to keep the ball and Andy Taylor gave away a penalty, only for the referee to overrule the linesman’s call.

Once the Whites finally got the ball downfield in stoppage time, they managed the final two minutes well and for the first time ever Bolton have nine successive wins at the Macron.
