Arsene Wenger continues his campaign to get Arsenal even more preferential treatment, but his latest choice of spokesman shows that old wrinkle chops is loosening still further his already tenuous grip on reality.
It was none other than Abou Diaby, whose pitiful bleating caught the attention of some obedient hack on the Evening Standard last week.
‘I don`t think we always get enough protection,` said Diaby, repeating the party line. ‘The way some teams play against us is disgraceful, in my opinion, and they can sometimes take advantage of this lack of protection and go in hard on us – which is why these bad things continue to happen.`
Diaby broke Ivan Campo`s foot when playing against Bolton in an FA Cup tie and was later sent off for a sickening challenge on Gretar Steinsson. He would have caused more injury by now, but in between those two incidents spent an extended period out of the game, after being the victim of a bad tackle at Sunderland. So not just a dirty player, but a stupid one too.
Taylor v Eduardo on the left. Diaby (who wants to be protected more) sticks the boot into Steinsson on the right. The difference? A couple of inches.
The Arsenal manager had something else to complain about at the weekend as his side fell further behind the big two.
‘The pitch is a massive handicap,` he sulked after a 1-1 draw at Birmingham.
