Bolton Countdown: Midfield

In our latest season preview article, we cast our eyes at our midfield and the myriad of options.

The midfield for Wanderers is a funny one. We have options, lots of them, but you could argue againat the lot of them at times. Certainly in the middle.

You have Mark Davies, who can do ‘it.’ He has done ‘it.’ But he’s often injured, nobody seems to know where to deploy him. Would you play him further forward, but he lacks a dynamism? Would you play him deeper, but he would certainly need somebody who can put in a tackle. If the stars align, he could still do alright.

Liam Trotter and Darren Pratley both have the popularity of serial killer. They could both do well in this division, but history suggests we’ll only see it in flashes.

Jay Spearing was missed last season. His face never seemed to fit under Lennon but new management could mean a fresh start.

Josh Vela needa to step up. He did well when he finally broke into the first team picture but on the whole, he did not kick on last season. It could be time for him to back up his recent words.

On the wings, Chris Taylor was brought in over the summer and he is a nailed on first choice. On the left, it seems Max Clayton has been given the shot at times, with Tom Walker around as well.

But out wide, there aren’t as many options as in the middle. And all those options in the middle need to prove themselves this term.
