Bolton Set For Long-Overdue Home Return

|

Bolton play their first home game since November tonight when they host Wycombe.

The match had been scheduled for the weekend before Christmas but turned out to be the first of the three matches postponed to our COVID outbreak, but now with players back and hopefully a couple of games under our belt since we can try and get back to winning ways.

Team news

Kieran Lee should be back in the squad after recovering from the virus, while new vice-captain Gethin Jones is progressing well but it’s probably a bit soon for him to be in the squad just yet. Xavier Amaechi in theory should now be okay to be involved after his loan extension was officially signed off. Eoin Doyle has obviously left, while Matt Gilks has stepped back into his coaching role with Luke Hutchinson being recalled, so Hutchinson could be the substitute goalkeeper. Andy Tutte, Josh Sheehan and Lloyd Isgrove remain long-term absentees.

Possible XI: Dixon; Fossey, Almeida Santos, Aimson, John; Williams, Lee; Amaechi. Thomason, Afolayan; Charles

Last meeting

Bolton’s only other home game against Wycombe was just under two years ago – in February 2020 we lost 2-0 to the Chairboys, with a Toto Nsiala own goal just before half-time, while Joe Jacobson then scored a second half penalty. We would go down that season, while Wycombe were eventually promoted via the play-offs.

The opposition

Wycombe are sat third at the moment, four points behind the top two, but missed the chance to cut that gap to a single point at the weekend when they drew with Sunderland. With eight goals, ex-Stoke and Burnley striker Sam Vokes will be an aerial threat up front, while veteran Garath McCleary has a number of goals and assists this season too. Their captain is left-back Jacobson, who as mentioned scored in the last meeting at the UniBol and is a threat from set-pieces.

Prediction

Wycombe had a game at the weekend, whereas we didn’t. Wycombe will be a tough night but reckon we can get something out of this. 1-1.
