Another ‘could have been great’ has fallen quickly

Medo Kamara, who impressed quickly upon joining us a highly rated battling midfielder from Partizan Belgrade, has officially left the greatest club in the world on loan at Maccabi Haifa on loan until the end of the season.

Neil Lennon has been incredibly frustrated by the lack of transfer action at Bolton Wanderers with many of his targets either opting for other clubs or proving too expensive.

We’re financially restricted, and he Bolton hierarchy are making sure that we remain within Financial Fair Play Restrictions. However, there once was a time when we could spend…

Let me take you back to the Summer of 2012, a Bolton that didn’t deserve to get relegated was looking forward to a confident campaign during which we expected to rocket straight back up to the Premier League under Owen Coyle. Our stars Chung Yong Lee and Stuart Holden were close to full fitness and we strengthened by bringing in the likes of Matt Mills, Andy Lonergan and Keith Andrew… Hold on a second…

Matt Mills cost 2 million. Lonergan cost several 100’000’s. Keith Andrews joined on a free, though his contract reportedly sees him paid 25,000 a week.

Owen Coyle was spend-happy in his first season in the Championship with Bolton, which would have been fine… had we gone straight back up.

We all know we didn’t, and while Dougie Freedman still had limited funds to spend the next Summer, he was able to shell out almost 1 million to bring in Medo Kamara and Craig Davies in January before spending in excess of 1.5 million on Jay Spearing that Summer.

30 months after the spending antics of Owen Coyle, Neil Lennon is in the position of having to sell several before he can buy.

One can argue that he shouldn’t need to spend if the likes of Jay Spearing can’t even start. However, that’s because the clever transfer dealings of Coyle and Freedman see Bolton with about 747.63 Championship quality central midfielders, one rebound board (Liam Trotter) and one fit standard Championship striker…

Now, getting back to the original topic of this article- this is why the likes of Jay Spearing and Medo Kamara will never again be able to blossom at this club.

They have to compete with too many others and in truth, they really shouldn’t have been signed. Both could do a job for most Championship sides, but the mal-weighted Bolton Wanderers is not the right place.

Few have fallen as quickly as Kamara and Spearing, and one would hope that they do well in pastures new and that the money gained from their moves can be re-invested WISELY.
