No Goals=No Hope

With just a over 2 weeks to go till Bolton embark on another season where the aim is to get back to the premier league, we are still short of the player who is going to give us a fighting chance.

Freedman’s busy summer started well in terms of numbers through the door but with the ‘Juke’ going to Burnley it is beginning to look like a waste of time if the missing piece of the jigsaw is not found.

I am sure Freedman knows that without someone to put the ball in the net mid table obscurity is about where we will finish at best.

To emphasise this point every team making the playoffs last season had someone who scored over 15 goals during the season most had 2 players who did this. Bolton`s best players were joint 28th in the list of top goal scorers one was the ‘Juke’ and the other Beckford with 9.

This is not a new problem for Bolton not since the days of Anelka did we have someone who could be relied on to score on a regular basis and you have to go back to Michael Ricketts to find Bolton’s last 15 goal a season man.

Looking back throughout Bolton`s promotions and play offs since the premier league we have always had someone to fire us up the league McGinlay, Taylor, Gudjohnson, Ricketts all got over 20 goals and the playoffs followed.

It is hard to believe that it is 12 seasons since Bolton had a player score 20 goals or more and whilst we managed in the premier league for a decade without one It is clear that if Bolton are to get back to the top flight Freedman needs to pull a rabbit out of the hat before the window closes.

On the shoe string budget of Bolton there will be no guarantee to any player brought in and the list of potential players will have few names on it in the price range we are looking at.

Despite Bolton’s busy summer so far the season defining business is yet to be done.
