Newcastle manager Graham Souness survived crisis talks with chairman Freddie Shepherd last night. Despite this the pressure on Souness’ position is still considerable leading many to consider him being one defeat from the sack.

Talk of potential replacements has centred on Sam Allardyce. The Bolton boss has caught the eye during his six year tenure at the Reebok. Guiding the Wanderers into the knockout stages of the UEFA Cup and maintaining a top six position in the Premiership.

It has been rumoured that Allardyce would welcome a move to St James’ due to his increased frustration at a lack of funds made available by Bolton chairman Phil Gartside.
