David Wheater
Re-signed before the season started, Wheater has formed a decent looking partnership with Mark Beevers. They’ve been able to soak up pressure away from home by and large, although it would be nice to see more clean sheets.
Gary Madine
Dubbed the ‘Goal Machine’ with a large dollop of irony last season, Madine actually has a solid if unspectacular goalscoring record in League One. And the drop down in level has seen him regularly on the scoresheet in the early weeks of the season, with three goals so far.
Jay Spearing
Has turned into some sort of Scouse Pirlo, with wonderstrikes against Sheffield United and Bristol Rovers. Has been everywhere defensively too, shielding the back four well.
Josh Vela
Had been linked with a move back up to the Championship, but like Spearing, has been good all around in the middle of the park, and bagging two goals including the late winner against Fleetwood.
