Ebi Smolarek has signed on a season-long loan from Spanish duffers, Racing Santander with an option to buy at the end of that period, if he doesn`t turn out to be fat, slow, lightweight, permanently injured or just plain crap. Cynical? Oh yes, but having witnessed Daniel Braaten, Heidar Helguson, Christian Wilhelmsson and Grzegorz Rasiak it seems the sensible thing to be.
Smolarek (smell a wreck?) scored no goals at the last World Cup, a feat he repeated at the recent European Championships, but he managed four last season in Spain. So that`s alright then. The consensus seems to be that he`s quite handy for pace, knows where the goal is, but falls over if there`s anything stronger than a light breeze. Maybe Kevin Nolan can show him where the pie shops are.
The prices he charges for fixing dripping taps, installing cisterns, unblocking drains etc have yet to be announced but will be released in due course.
