Bolton : The Independent Says Sorry

The Independent has printed an apology of sorts for a story which appeared in April, claiming that Bolton were about to sack Gary Megson and adopt a continental style structure, with a team coach and director of football working together.

The paper now acknowledges that its reporting was inaccurate and has published a retraction at the request of Bolton Wanderers Football Club. Whilst this is welcome, it raises more questions than it answers.

Did Bolton request the correction when the article appeared? If so, why has it taken so long?

Did Bolton wait until now to ask for a retraction? If so, why?

What happened to Samson Siasia? The Nigeria under-23 coach was mooted to be Megson`s successor. He claimed that Bolton had been in contact.

Was the story a result of someone getting their wires crossed, or an act of malice?

No comment has been made about the predictions that were made in the article, regarding Bolton`s Premier League demise. For example:

Demotion to the Championship appears an inevitability for Bolton, who were beaten 4-0 to Aston Villa on Saturday and are four points from safety with just five league games remaining, three of which are away from home.

And:

With just one victory in 12 matches since the departure of Nicolas Anelka to Chelsea for £15m it appears inevitable that Bolton will be relegated.

That`s a lot of inevitability for one article. Care to admit you got that wrong as well?
