BWFC_85 explores hidden gems…

You’ve heard the saying, ‘those who can’t do…teach’. Well, what do you do if you can’t teach? Maybe, scout for those who can ‘do’ and complete the cycle?

Dougie Freedman prides himself on nurturing talent from those who are at the beginning of their playing careers. If he wants to maintain his impressive CV there are a number of players at Bolton who can be thrown on the potters-wheel to be shaped and formed into impressive and expensive pieces. As long as Lennie Lawrence isn’t sat behind him lending a ‘Ghostly’ helping hand… Shudder… Our manager said earlier in his reign, he wouldn’t shy away from dipping into the lower leagues to unearth that uncut diamond. While there are players currently at Bolton who I’m sure are already benefiting from Dougie’s ability to get down with the kids, he will look to freshen up the team with new blood. As the season has come and nearly gone, I’ve acted as a mock-scout for the Whites and kept an eye out for any potential future signings for Dougie to get his mitts on. One player who has stood out to me and fits the bill is:

Matt Ritchie, Bournemouth- The young looking, 23 year old winger was named League One player of the year and deservedly so. His pace, trickery and eye for goal I’m sure hasn’t gone unnoticed by several Premier League scouts. Di Canio was furious when Swindon sold him behind his back for a snip £500,000 and I’m sure Bournemouth would listen to offers around the £1m mark, doubling their money.

If there was a player-profile you would submit to Mr Freedman, who would it be? Also, if we are promoted, should we still scour for youth a la Aston Villa? Did Sean Scannell of Huddersfield impress you enough to want to unite him again with our gaffer? Are you wondering what Dwight Gayle’s goal tally would be with Eagles, Chungy and Holden providing the assists? Which promising youngster has caught your eye this season, at the Reebok, or on your travels? Maybe they impressed in that Sky Sports game you only watched because the wife needed your help? Who knows, the gold nugget you think you’ve found may already be on Dougie’s short-list…
