Changes Cost Bolton In Shootout Defeat

|

Bolton went out of the Carabao Cup last night as they lost on penalties to Wigan.

The match finished goalless in 90 minutes, and for the second round in succession we went to a penalty shootout, but this time, there’d be no glory, as Nathan Delfouneso missed his spot-kick when it had gone all the way to sudden death. Maybe he shouldn’t have done a stuttery run-up, but it was the less the run-up and the fact he didn’t hit the target and at least ask the goalkeeper the question that should be the more annoying thing, In any case, it’s not like he meant to miss it and I’m not sure he needed to issue an apology after the match. It happens.

During the game we didn’t have as many chances against Wigan. It could be easy to blame the much-changed team, a team that I would have liked to have seen fewer changes really, but a lot of the upheaval came at the back and they still managed to keep a clean sheet.

It did mean there was some teething troubles going forward, with a fair bit of the possession we had being in our half of the pitch. But still, we went to a half-decent Wigan team and drew in 90 minutes. Had that happened in a league game, there wouldn’t have been too many complaints.

It’s disappointing, as it would have been great to get in the third round and either get a big tie or even progress further and get into the last 16, but we weren’t exactly going to win the competition and if we achieve something in the league, this will be forgotten about.
