Former Bolton player Fernando Hierro has been appointed as the head coach at Real Oviedo.

Hierro, who played for Wanderers in the 2004-05 season, was offically announced this morning, and has signed a contract until June 2017, with an option of a further year.

He will be presented next week. It is his first head coach or manager job in senior football, but since his retirement he has built up a strong CV. He was sporting director at the Spanish football federation, before moving into club football as general manager at Malaga. He then spent some time as part of Carlo Ancelotti’s staff at Real Madrid, the second best team in white he ever played for.

Real Oviedo were promoted and last season played their first season back in Spain’s second tier, narrowly missing out on a playoff spot and a potential promotion to La Liga, where they haven’t played since 2001.

Hierro had been a name that had been sometimes touted, albeit unrealistically, as a candidate to manage Bolton when the job has been free in the past. If it goes well and we sort ourselves out, one day it could happen.

In any case, good luck Fernando!
