Today the town of Bolton, the club and it’s fans remember the tragic events if 9 March 1946, when 33 fans died at the FA Cup tie against Stoke City.

Countless more would have been injured and affected by the disaster too. Indeed my own great grandfather attended the match, and my grandma has told me how he was unable to go to a football match ever again after witnessing the horror.

Rather than writing about all of the background to the disaster, I will link to the article from 2011 which details the disaster and it’s aftermath.

This week, the club has done brilliantly to mark the disaster, which is something that has not always been able to have been said.

Last night saw a performance of FA Cup anthem Abide With Me pre match, plus relatives of victims being guests pitchside before the match. There is also the commemorative third kit and the some national media attention.

There will also be a memorial service at the Macron this afternoon starting at 3pm. Entrance is via the gate next to Block A. If you can get there, please do.

To the 33, RIP. We will never forget.
