The Perils of Facebook

For football fans, this is the most dismal time of the year. The previous season is a fading memory and the new one is some way off. Then there`s the transfer speculation, most of it made up by journos who can`t find any real news to report. Maybe Crystal Palace winger Ashley-Paul Robinson had that in mind when he revealed details of a move to Fulham on his Facebook page, but it`s more likely that he`s just a bit thick.

‘Ashley-Paul is goin fulham on monday. If i pull dis off im on dis ting,` he wrote last Saturday, unwittingly spreading the news to 2.7 million members of the site`s London section as well as his 194 Facebook friends. ‘Ashley-Paul is travling 2 Bath With Fulham Fingers Crossed,` he added the day after. Ashley-Paul will now be seeking alternative employment.

‘We feel it’s probably better that he looks elsewhere to further his career,` said Palace manager Neil Warnock, who at one time had offered the player a new contract.

Social networking sites are yet another pitfall that young footballers would do well to avoid. Former Bolton academy player Tom Brooks has a somewhat unfortunate intro on his Bebo page.

my name is tom brooks i am 18 and i luv football. i support united and play 4 bolton wanderers.

You support who? With that sort of allegiance it`s just as well that he too, is looking for another club.
