Arsenal supporters hoping that Emmanuel Adebayor receives severe punishment for his antics in the game at Manchester City may well be disappointed. Adebayor raced 90 yards to celebrate in front of Gunners fans after scoring the home side`s third goal, but he shouldn`t have even been on the pitch after stamping on Robin Van Persie earlier.

Gary Neville taunted Liverpool fans at Old Trafford in a similar fashion but received only a fine. At least Adebayor will be censured for the stamp right? Well, not necessarily. Without an admission by referee Mark Clattenburg that he didn`t see the incident the FA will be powerless to act.

Clattenburg officiated in a bad tempered game between Bolton and Liverpool at the Reebok in January 2006, in which Mohamed Sissoko ran ten yards to stamp on El Hadj Diouf who was laid on the floor. Amazingly, Clattenburg claimed that he`d seen it and didn`t think action appropriate.

It will be interesting to see what stance he takes this time, now that a player from a team in the Sky four has been on the receiving end.
