Former England striker Emile Heskey has called on the Bolton team to build on our performance against Middlesbrough in our coming home games.

Having put in a good performance last night and been unlucky not to come out with at least a point to show for our second half efforts in particular, Heskey told the Official Site that having gone toe to toe with a team heavily tipped for automatic promotion this year – if we replicate that performance and take our chances against others we should be able to lift ourselves up the table with a run of victories.

Having completed 90 minutes following a hamstring problem, he said.

‘We dug in and rolled our sleeves up. We pushed Middlesbrough all the way, but in the end we’ve come away empty handed. Some [people will say it doesn’t count for anything, and it doesn’t in terms of points, but we needed that kind of performance.’

Heskey goes on to say that basically for him in the first half of the game he felt we showed Middlesbrough too much respect given their form and position, but once we got in amongst them properly everyone could see how much better we were in the second period – and that’s something we can take forward.

‘We had to be solid defensively and we certainly showed that. It was still a little bit of an easy goal for them to score, but on the whole we did okay. We can take a lot from the game. We showed a lot of fight and a lot of grit, and we’re going to need that going into these two home games. Defensively against Middlesbrough we were sound – we now have to try and push on some in front of our own fans.’
